Touchdown South Africa
The world is shrinking. And yet 37 hours of transit seems like an infinitely large amount of time. After three flights, a whirlwind pursuit of beer and bratwurst in Frankfurt for some (and international terminal showers for others) and a somewhat dubious descent into Cape Town, we were delighted to finally be in South Africa. After briefly settling into our rooms, we gathered in the hotel lounge where we chatted about the interview instrument we had been curating for some time and reviewed our itinerary for the week. Both remain subject to change, an inescapable reality of field work.
We were also very happy to meet our local RA, Helen, who is completing her Masters in Political Science at the University of Stellenbosch.
After a quick bite - including delectable chilli poppers and ostrich burgers - we settled in for the night, furiously reviewing reading notes and editing interview questions.
